Harold Herbert Smith, age 94, passed away on Thursday October 13, 2022 at Griffin Hospital in Derby due to complications from Covid. He was the loving husband of Edna (Douillet) Smith for 68 years before her passing in 2018. Harold was born July 12, 1928 at Griffin Hospital, son of the late Herbert Smith and the late Elizabeth (Beardsley) Smith. He was a lifelong resident of Oxford and graduated from Seymour High School, class of 1946. Harold's first job out of school was at Charlie Kirk's Garage in Oxford. He then worked for Chatfield Grain and Coal delivering bulk feed and coal throughout the tri-state area. Next he performed oil burner service for Chatfield Oil. He also ran the hardware department at Chatfield Lumber and retired as a reel carrier from Kerite Company in Seymour. Though when asked once his religion, he answered "Swamp Yankee", he and his wife were active members of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Oxford. He served as a junior warden at the church and cooked chicken for the church's annual chicken barbeque. After retirement, he and Edna travelled throughout the United States and would often reminisce about their adventures. He was a lifelong car and motorcycle enthusiast and enjoyed his status as a "gear head". His many interests included watching the NY Yankees (with his friend Jim), watching the UConn women's basketball team, chair caning, good meals and weekly Dominoes games/battles with family and friends. He also enjoyed spending time at cottages he owned on Monson Pond in Maine and on Lake Housatonic in Shelton, CT. His kind and thoughtful ways will be remembered by all who knew him. He had many friends and absolutely no enemies - an amazing feat for a 94 year old man. His daughter fondly remembers his belief that if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. Harold is survived by his three children - Gary Smith (Karen), Frederick Smith (JoAnn) and Brenda Vogel (Frederick), his seven grandchildren - Benjamin Smith, Carly (Smith) Bartek (Erik), Ryan Smith (Katie), Steven Smith (Val), Frederick "Ricky" Vogel, Jameson "Jamey" Vogel and Eliza Vogel, and two great grandchildren - Niall Flavin and Patricia "Pea" Smith Nicholls. Calling hours will be Sunday October 16 from 4 to 6 pm at Miller Ward Funeral Home, 260 Bank St (Rte 67) in Seymour. A service will be held directly after with The Rev. Ellen A. Donnelly. A graveside service followed by interment will be held Monday morning at 10 am at Southford Cemetery, 14-16 Hawley Road, Oxford. In lieu of flowers, contributions to St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 421 Oxford Rd, Oxford CT 06478, would be greatly appreciated.
